  • Portobello Beach Bath Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH15 1HB United Kingdom (map)

Come along and bring family and friends while we draw a line in the sand in defence of Our Forth. Bring home-made kites with messages to fly on the beach, or join the kids chalking our vision of a clean and happy future on the promenade.

Use the Facebook event to invite all your friends or email them with a link to this page.

The Firth of Forth, crucial for wildlife on its shores and margins, for marine wildlife and for recreation, needs to be defended.

INEOS plans to dump treated wastewater from fracking into the Forth. Whilst they think this is OK, professionals working in water don't agree. In a response to an Environment Agency consultation published earlier this year, they stated:

We are concerned about the ability to treat flowback fluid at the present time. Advanced treatment technologies may not be able to treat the levels of dissolved solids in produced water which would limit the ability to treat produced water on site. Dilution at a treatment works may be able to reduce the salinity, however it may not be appropriate to dilute to the level required to dilute the radionuclides present to regulatory levels. It is certain that water treatment capacity will be an issue if the industry grows, and wastewater volumes increase.

And another problem is that there are only a handful of treatment works equipped to deal with this level of toxicity. So that means thousands of gallons of wastewater travelling in tankers on our roads, which means more emissions, noise, and health risks from particulate emissions.

So make a kite and put a message on it, or bring your children to chalk their pictures of the world they want on the promenade. See you there.
